Boys' Lacrosse Pounds Swampscott
The Headers use seven unanswered goals in the second half to secure a 12-5 home win over the Big Blue Saturday morning.
Two teams in need of a win met up Saturday morning at Piper Field in a Northeastern Conference lacrosse match.
Swampscott and Marblehead were tied 5-5 at halftime, and the Headers scored seven straight in the second half to win going away, 12-5.
The Big Blue (6-10) lost 10-7 to Arlington Catholic heading into Saturday’s game. Marblehead (10-5) dropped two overtime games last week, 11-10 to Beverly and 12-11 to Danvers.

Both teams have already qualified for post-season play, representing the NEC South.
Ian Magg put the Headers on the board first; the midfielder bounced a shot past Swampscott goalie Mark McMahon at 10:13.

Zach Cuzner put Marblehead up by two, before Chris Mason put the Big Blue on the scoreboard.
With Swampscott’s Richie Sullivan off for slashing, Brian Gellert scored with one second left in the first quarter to put the Headers up 3-1.
Swampscott went ahead early in the second quarter on Mason’s second goal of the game and a single tally by Sean Lannon.
The Big Blue led for all of ten seconds before Maag tied it at 4-4 with 8:05 to play in the half. Maag completed his hat trick at 5:15, bouncing a shot by McMahon’s left side.
Swampscott’s Adam Samborn sent the teams into halftime tied at 5-5 when he beat Wilson Lautner with 11:01 gone in the second quarter.
The second half was all Marblehead on the scoreboard, Alex Whitmore scored three goals, Maag had two, Jacob Maselek and Sam Fox had singles for the final 12-5 score.
Swampscott’s Pat Kennedy hit the post twice in the second half, and when the Blue did get shots on goal, Lautner turned them away. The freshman made two great saves on Matt Gambale and Mason while the game was still in doubt.
“Our guys played hard, it’s a credit to them,” Big Blue coach Josh Field said. “We didn’t get the result we wanted, but we played hard today.”
“We needed that win,” Marblehead coach John Wilkens said. “We had two very, very tough losses this week, so it was good for us to win this one.”
The game featured solid checking and numerous heavy hits near midfield and on the attacking ends, it’s obvious these two teams are not fond of each other.
The Big Blue are in action on Monday, hosting Martha’s Vineyard before they finish up the regular season next Wednesday at Bedford.
Marblehead takes on Masconomet on the road Monday before finishing up at home Thursday at 4 p.m. against Salem.
