Fishwagons Take 2nd Place at ME States
Last Weekend the Fishwagons traveled up to Castine, Maine for the Maine High School Sailing State Championship and they placed in second – and only one point behind first place!
This past weekend the Fishwagons traveled to the Maine Maritime Academy to compete in the Downeast Fleet Racing Championship. The regatta was over the entire weekend and doubled as the Maine High School State Championship. The team traveled down to Maine on Friday afternoon after school and arrived there later that day. The Maine teams provided housing and food for the Fishwagons, just as we had for them when they came to Marblehead at the beginning of the season for our annual team race.
The breeze started light on Saturday before shifting and building up to 12 knots. The 12 knots made for great sailing conditions and allowed for some good racing. Sunday was light to start, like Saturday, but filled in late morning to around 10 knots of breeze. The team did very well during the two days of racing. At the end of the two days, Peter Lynn (skipper), Emily Mills (crew), and Marika van Dusen (crew) were 6th in A division with an average finish 6.4 over the total 10 races. Emily and Marika switched in out for the races with Peter skippering for all ten races. The group had some great placings getting a first, third, and fourth among others. Hannah Lynn (skipper), Lily Roberts (crew) and Alan McKinnon (crew) won B division with an average placing of 2.6 over the total 10 races. Just like with A division, Lily and Alan swapped in and out crewing for Hannah. The group had some excellent finished, getting three 1st places, two 2nd places, two 3rd places, and two 4th place finishes among others. The Fishwagons finished 2nd place overall with 90 total points, only one point behind first place!
We came so close! First place came down to within one point. Had the Fishwagons gained one additional point we would have tied and won on the tie breaker (tie breakers are decided by the number of first place wins between the two teams, Marblehead had four first places win compared with Yarmouth's three first place wins). As the Fishwagons' coach Nick Burke said after the regatta, "Bottom line is every point counts! Good effort by everyone."
The Maine State Championship Regatta was the penultimate regatta of the season for the Fishwagons. This Wednesday they will compete in the Massachusetts High School State Championship at the MIT Sailing Pavilion.
