Fishwagons Take on Big Blue

Last week, the MHS Sailing team defeated the Big Blue in a team race over in Swampscott and then traveled down to the US Coast Guard Academy for the CT State Championships.

Last Monday, after going to Portland for the O’Day Qualifier, the Fishwagons traveled to Swampscott to team race the Swampscott High School team. This was the first time that the Fishwagons had ever traveled to Swampscott to race their team. It was a great day of sailing with some of the best wind of the season (reaching around thirteen knots). The conditions were great for sailing with it only being a little bit cloudy and minimal waves.  The Fishwagons did very well winning all seven races against Swampscott.  Ryan Walker (skipper) and Marika van Dusen (crew), Nicole Torrie (skipper) and Cashel Rice (crew), David Zymba (skipper) and Carly Hood (crew) sailed the first few races with Alex Kerai (crew) and Katie Rodger (crew) going in for Marika and Cashel for the last few races. The team had a very successful day of racing and will be racing against Swampscott in Marblehead Harbor on May 7.

This past Saturday, the team went all the way to the Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut to compete in the Connecticut State Championships.  The wind filled in around mid-morning allowing for some great racing. There were a total nine races sailed with A-Fleet sailing in FJs (Flying Juniors) for the first half of the day and then switching to 420s. B-Fleet started in 420s and then switched to FJs. A-Fleet was sailed by Renee Torrie (skipper) and Marika van Dusen (crew) with B-Fleet sailed by Dave Kinney (skipper) and Alex Kerai (crew). The team did fairly well for the day, finishing thirteenth overall. Each fleet did well with Renee and Marika finishing in fifth two times and one time in sixth while Dave and Alex finished seventh in one of their races with both fleets doing well throughout the day.  The team had to work against some minor current and shifting wind patterns but overall did a good job.

It was a great week of sailing with the Fishwagons doing great against Swampscott winning all seven races and coming in thirteenth at the Connecticut State Championship.  This Tuesday, St. John’s Prep will be coming down to Pleon to team race the Fishwagons. Those results will be in next week’s recap. Until then you can grab your shades this afternoon and come watch the Fishwagons from any spot in the harbor!
