Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA Wins Grant from LIVESTRONG Foundation to Implement Wellness Program for Cancer Survivors
Thanks to a grant from the Lance Armstrong Foundation through the YMCA of the USA, the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA will offer the national LIVESTRONG program to provide a supportive, healthful environment for community members who have survived or are dealing with cancer. Following treatment, Y staff can offer positive reinforcement through the LIVESTRONG program, yielding positive attitudes among participants, which is vital for a healthy lifestyle.
The YMCA has always strived to meet the needs of the community. “It’s our mission and purpose as a community organization to meet the needs of ALL, regardless of income, lifestyle, age, race, or health condition,” says Scott Hitchcock, executive director of the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA. “We have a long-term strategic goal of creating a ‘Main Street’ culture in which we bring together people from all backgrounds. We are committed to aggressively seek opportunities to meet the needs of our community. We aim to be a place where all can belong ... truly belong, not just be.”
LIVESTRONG is a perfect fit in the YMCA of the North Shore’s efforts to pioneer a healthier community. Hitchcock says that across the association, the Y is “forming and solidifying partnerships to implement childhood obesity prevention programs. We are working closely with healthcare organizations to strategically plan the next phases of our health-focused programming, including diabetes prevention and support programs for individuals living with chronic disease. LIVESTRONG for cancer survivors is a logical next step.”
Hitchcock is pleased that LIVESTRONG will be piloted at the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA. “We have the capacity to pursue LIVESTRONG at this time. We have the support of our Board, the commitment of our dedicated staff, and we have community members who need this program. The timing and conditions are right, and this grant will help us to launch a very important program that will positively affect our members.
“Many of our members who have survived cancer have shared stories with us about how the Y and its staff have helped them improve their lives and reach their goals after being ill,” explains Jaime Bloch, Health & Wellness Director of the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA. “Imagine what we could do now that we can offer the LIVESTRONG program!”
LIVESTRONG at the Lynch/van Otterloo YMCA will be a free 12-week program for adult cancer survivors that will:
• Help those affected by cancer reach holistic health goals
• Strengthen the whole person
• Focus on well-being of survivors and families
• Offer supportive community to survivors and families
• Enhance strength & endurance
• Restore balance
• Improve vitality, body image
• Provide tools for the participant’s journey to wellness
“ With the LIVESTRONG grant, we will be able to reach out and connect cancer survivors in our community who are currently without any support,” explains Bloch. “Through this grant and this program, we will be able to engage new people and help them reach their goals following treatment. We’re so excited to add this program to the work we’re already doing to strengthen our Y and our community!”
