MHS Sailing Faces Pingree During Vacation Week

During the week of April Vacation, the MHS sailing team was practicing hard for a regatta that week against Pingree School, and then a regatta that upcoming weekend against twelve schools.

Through teamwork, perseverance and great coaching, the Marblehead High School sailing team had a fantastic week of sailing during April break.  It started last Saturday in Sharon, Massachusetts as the MHS team participated in the Sharon Invitational regatta, sailed on Lake Massapoag. Nine sailors traveled to Sharon for the annual regatta and they competed in two fleets (A fleet and B fleet). For the A fleet, the team of skipper Hannah Lynn and crew Dylan Mace finished second out of twelve teams by the end of the day. Then for the B fleet, the team of skipper Nick LaChance and Emily Mills sailed the first six races while the team of Peter Lynn and Ryan Hoey sailed the last two races; the two teams for the B fleet scored a seventh place finish out of twelve teams, which then resulted in a fifth place overall finish from Marblehead. The Sharon Invitational was an opportunity for the team to practice at the same place that the New England Qualifiers will be held April 21st-22nd.

Then on Tuesday, April 17th, Pingree School came down to Marblehead for a team race in the afternoon. Six boats were raced with three being used by MHS and the other three by Pingree.  In order to win a race, a team had to score ten points or less.  Marblehead beat Pingree with a score of 3-1with MHS winning the best three out of five series.  Teams for Marblehead during the Pingree race were skipper Emily LaChance with crew Ryan Hoey, skipper Peter Lynn with crew Alex Kerai, and skipper Nick LaChance with crew Emily Mills for the first three races and crew Emily Ivers for the last race.  Marblehead consistently scored ten or less points, except for the third race where they scored eleven points.  The race against Pingree was a great opportunity for Marblehead to practice strategy and communication during team races.

For this coming week (April 21st – April 28th) the MHS sailing team has three major regattas going on.  The weekend of April 21st-22nd the team will be competing in the New England High School Sailing Fleet Racing Championship (the O’Day trophy) first in Sharon on the 21st and then Hyannis on the 22nd. The next weekend, the team will be traveling to Tabor Academy for an invitational team race. The other regatta will be taking place during the week in Marblehead Harbor on the 27th against Pingree School, so grab your shades and come cheer us on from any spot around the harbor!
