This past winter and spring, Salem Sound Coastwatch’s School to Sea program led a Drifter Program with local students in the Salem Sound community with the help of an awarded MIT Sea Grant. The drifters are low cost and student-built devices that track currents via satellite telemetry. While giving real-time data on currents in the Gulf of Maine that contributes to NOAA’s Integrated Ocean Observing System and validates numerical models, students are also able to collect and analyze the data for their own education purposes. This program has been running since 2004 and was founded by the Gulf of Maine Lobster Foundation, the Southern Maine Community College (SMCC), and NOAA’s Northeast Fisheries Science Center, and since then, more than 1,500 different drifters have been deployed by about 100 schools!&nbsp;
Registration is required. Attendance to join in person is limited to 50 attendants, or attend online via Zoom. Alex Borreil is an Educator for the School to Sea program for Salem Sound Coastwatch and holds a bachelor’s in Environmental Studies from Hobart and William Smith Colleges. In addition to being an educator, she was also the Principal Investigator for the drifter program. Previous to coming to Salem, Borreil spent a collective six years leading and creating field and classroom-based marine science courses and research projects for students in the Caribbean and Florida Keys. As a New England Native, her goal is to inspire young scientists to continue learning and protecting their local coastlines through hands-on educational experiences.&nbsp;

Drifters - Ocean Currents in the Gulf of Maine and STEM Education

Americans are living longer than ever before, but longer life does not always mean better life. As healthcare advances and lifespans extend, many families are asking difficult questions about affordability, caregiving, ageism and quality of life. In partnership with The John A. Hartford Foundation, join us for this special screening of “Aging in America: Survive or Thrive,” a PBS documentary narrated by Martin Sheen and based on Dr. Robert Butler’s Pulitzer Prize-winning book, “Why Survive?” This thoughtful film explores the challenges and opportunities of aging in the United States today. Following our screening, we’ll enjoy a live discussion with producers Dr. Ken Dychtwald and Neil Steinberg, using questions submitted in our Q&amp;A by participants like you.
A viewing of the online lecture will be held in the Event Center at Abbot Public Library, followed by a discussion session.

Dr. Ken Dychtwald is a gerontologist, psychologist, and best-selling author who is regarded as the foremost visionary and original thinker regarding topics surrounding aging. He founded Age Wave, an acclaimed think tank focused on the social and business implications of global aging and rising longevity. Since then, he has served as a fellow of the World Economic Forum, received the American Society on Aging Award for outstanding national leadership three times, and was featured at two White House Conferences on Aging.

On his 27th birthday on May 19, 1776, Captain James Mugford became an early Revolutionary War hero and martyr, killed in combat by the British in retaliation for his having audaciously and fortuitously captured a 300-ton British supply ship a day or two before. His young wife successfully negotiated with the captain of the British warship for his release after the young Marblehead ship’s master had been “impressed” (essentially kidnapped from off a Marblehead street) and held prisoner on that British ship. While on board though, Mugford heard about the supply ship’s imminent arrival. Soon after, commanding the Franklin out of Marblehead, he and his crew, posing as a harmless fishing vessel, captured the valuable munitions transport. Tragically, he died in a retaliatory battle the following day. The vital and desperately needed munitions and supplies however, remained in American hands. Hear more about this heroic action in Doliber’s talk.

Donald Doliber was appointed as Marblehead’s Town Historian after 24 years as an award-winning history teacher, who was selected as the "Outstanding American History Teacher in the United States" by the Daughters of the American Revolution (D.A.R.), followed by 17 years as an assistant high school principal. His ancestors arrived in Marblehead in the 1630s, and were fishermen, Selectmen, and merchants in the early community and later, and a few served in the Revolutionary War.

This event is presented in collaboration with the Marblehead 250 Committee and Abbot Public Library.&nbsp;

This lively outdoor event brings history to life as skilled artisans and historic interpreters demonstrate the trades and traditions that shaped Marblehead and the wider region. Stroll the grounds, meet members of Glover’s Marblehead Regiment, and see 18th-century recipes come to life with a culinary historian—offering a vivid glimpse into everyday life in early New England.
Throughout the day, visitors can watch a remarkable range of traditional crafts in action. Meet a mantuamaker demonstrating the art of 18th-century dressmaking, a cabinetmaker shaping fine furniture by hand, and a leatherworker practicing techniques once essential to daily life and maritime communities. Learn how candles were made with a traditional chandler, explore the tools and skills of a master gunsmith, and see a master tinsmith at work. Discover how rope was formed for shipboard use, how flax was processed into fiber, and how basketry and tape-loom weaving supported households and trade alike. You can also observe the delicate process of copperplate engraving and printing—an essential craft in the world of early books and images.
It’s a day of hands-on history, learning, and discovery for visitors of all ages—an opportunity to experience the ingenuity, resourcefulness, and artistry that built early New England, and to meet the dedicated craftspeople who keep these remarkable traditions alive today.

They regularly film drag story hours and interview local residents at Ipswich Community Access Media, perform with the Cape Ann Symphony and Nonconformist Orchestra (the first and only transgender/non-binary, LGBTQ+ and minority inclusive professional orchestra), and serve on the Ipswich Cultural Council Board. As an active LGBTQ+ professional, they have been invited to speak at numerous high schools, perform for Hamilton-Wenham HRC Pride Picnic, World Pride DC 2025, &amp; actively produce content with the Trustees.

We all have a wish to be happy and avoid suffering. Throughout our lives, we travel many different paths driven by this desire: career, relationships, home, vacations, etc. But ultimately, these external paths do not yield the results we seek.
During these introductory Dharma talks and meditation sessions, we will discuss the internal paths that can lead to discovering real happiness and a more meaningful life.
Join longtime Kadampa Buddhist practitioner, Tim Hogarty, to:
