Civil War Museum Schedule

Marblehead's Unique G.A.R. and Civil War Museum's schedule for the 2011 season.

The following press release was issued by Pam Peterson, Director of the Marblehead Museum and Historical Society:

Marblehead’s G.A.R. Post #82 is named after the town’s first Civil War casualty, John P. Goodwin. Left to the Marblehead Historical Society by the last Civil War veterans, it is still there today. The Marblehead G.A.R. Post is unique in New England, and possibly the entire United States because its inner meeting room remains exactly as it was during the time of its use. It is frozen in time, the meeting place of many Civil War veterans who came to support each other with friendship, memories and a financial helping hand.

The large Bible, mounted on a flag draped stand, is said to remain open to same page that was read on the day of the last meeting. Four ornately carved chairs face each other on all four sides of the room. Flags of the United States and portraits of their heroes, Washington, Lincoln and Ulysses S. Grant are at the front of the room. The walls are filled with photographs and mementos of these men and their time at war.
