Coast Guard Search for Missing Kayakers Near Marblehead

Salem, MA — The Coast Guard launched a search in Salem Harbor Sunday after two unmanned kayaks were found adrift near Misery Island.

The kayaks had no contact information, authorities said.

“With the amount of boating traffic in the area and people on the beach, they likely would have seen if someone was in trouble,” said Coast Guard Petty Officer Dean Drake in a statement. “We could reach out to the owners if there was contact info on the boards; but because there isn’t, we have to assume someone is in distress."

A search involving a helicopter turned up nothing as of early Monday morning.
