Easy Sailing For U12 Mariners

The girls rebounded quickly from their 11-7 loss to the Georgetown Gales on Aug. 3, and took home an easy 20-1 victory over the Georgetown Royals on Wednesday at Marblehead High School.

After a tough 11-7 loss to the Georgetown Gales on Aug. 3, the U12 Marblehead Mariners softball team completely dominated their game against the Georgetown Royals on Wednesday at Marblehead High School.

The girls allowed a single run in the top of the first, but responded with 20 runs of their own over the five-inning mercy rule shortened game. When all was said and done, every player on the Marblehead squad had recorded a run in the win.

Nicole Frevold pitched all five innings for the Mariners, allowing just one run, two hits and two walks. She also struck out one batter.

Marblehead plated four runs in the bottom of the first inning, as Margaret Ross, Jessie Pearce, Emily Promise and Zoe Daher all crossed home plate. Emily Trasher and Ally Hopkins both contributed RBI singles, while Daher crushed a two-RBI-double into deep centerfield.

After a short 1-2-3 top of the second inning, the Mariners picked right up where they left off, scoring six more times in the bottom of the inning to bring the score to 10-1. Frevold, Kelly Brown, Ross, Pearce, Samantha Payne and Trasher accounted for the runs in the second. They were brought home on a combination of steals and passed balls, along with an RBI-single from Pearce and another two-RBI-double from Daher.

The third inning was more of the same, as Georgetown went down in four batters, and Marblehead continued to extend their lead. The Mariners scored another six runs during their time at the plate, making the score 16-1. Hopkins, Emily Tejada, Frevold, Brown, Ross and Pearce all reached home in the inning. The bats were alive for the local girls as Tejada hit an RBI-double; Pearce, Promise and Payne each hit RBI-singles; and Trasher followed up with an RBI-sacrifice ground-out to end the inning.

As Georgetown once again failed to get back in the game in the fourth, Marblehead took full advantage of their final at bats before the mercy rule ended the game. The girls plated another four runs before the game was ended, and they easily secured the victory at 20-1.

Ross, Pearce, Frevold and Brown scored three times each, leading the run parade. Pearce had a great game at the plate, going three-for-four with three singles and two RBI. Daher also made a significant contribution on offense, batting two-for-three with two-RBI doubles and a walk.

Next week marks the end of the Middle-Essex League regular season, and the Mariners have two more games to improve on their 6-5-1 record. They face off against the Beverly Panthers on Aug. 9 at Centerville School in Beverly, and finish their season against the Lynn Wyoma Wildcats on Aug. 11 at Veterans School.
