First in '61- Marblehead and the Civil War

Don Doliber to Speak at Marblehead Museum

April, 2011 will mark 150 years since the beginning of the Civil War in the United States.  Don Doliber will continue the Marblehead 101 lecture series at the Marblehead Museum with his talk, First in '61- Marblehead in the Civil War on Thursday April 14 at 7:30 pm. Admission is $10 for members and $15 for nonmembers at the Marblehead Museum & Historical Society at 170 Washington Street.

On April 15, 1861, President Abraham Lincoln announced that the United States had declared war on the Confederate states.   The three Marblehead existing militia companies responded immediately. The captains of the three militia were Captain Knott Martin of the Sutton Light Infantry, Captain Richard Phillips of the Lafayette Guards and Captain Francis Boardman of the Glover Light Guards. They were credited with arriving first for Massachusetts.

Doliber is a popular and well known local historian and educator. He taught American history for 24 years and is recently retired as Assistant Principal at Masconomet High School. Actively involved in the community and local history in many ways, Doliber's research has been published in many books and journals. His enthusiasm for historical subjects is contagious.
