Indie-maverick (and major label veteran) Melissa Ferrick is an accomplished singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who has shared stages with artists as wide-ranging as Bob Dylan, Paul Westerberg, Weezer and Ani DiFranco, and performs over 150 shows a year -- often for audiences of 7500 or more. Her extraordinarily passionate, grassroots fan base began when she opened for Morrissey in 1991, and has grown into one of the most loyal followings in recent indie memory. With songs that "cut to the bone thanks to their truthful, personal viewpoints" (CMJ), the native New Englander is a powerhouse vocalist/guitarist who has steadily released DIY projects since her prior stints on Atlantic and W.A.R.? Records. A six-time Boston Music Award and GLAMA Winner, Ferrick was recently signed to New York-based label MPress Records, after being featured as the headline artist on Volume 1 of the New Arrivals Charity Compilation Series, benefiting Gulf Coast Hurricane Relief. A passionate Out artist with a devoted LGBT following, Ferrick goes to great lengths to be accessible to fans, and is beloved for her magnetic personality, fierce honesty and lightning-speed rhythm guitar style. A high energy solo performer, Ferrick taught herself guitar while pursuing studies in flugelhorn at the prestigious Berklee School of Music, where she has frequently returned as a guest lecturer. And now, there is Still Right Here (her latest release), the sum of these hard-earned parts set to music, Ferrick’s gorgeous purpose unspooling over the ten tracks that comprise the album. “This is the record I’ve wanted to make for a long time,” explains Ferrick. “The sound of it – the songwriting is definitely a step above where I was a few years ago.” The growth reflected on Still Right Here is a direct result of the emotional topography of Ferrick’s life, shaped by the events of the past few years. After touring in support of 2008’s critically acclaimed Goodbye Youth, Ferrick found herself back in her Massachusetts base, home for the longest time in nearly two decades. “After [that album] came out I think I just needed to stop and figure out what I needed to do.” Shortly after returning home, Ferrick embarked on a professional and personal reckoning that would find her better off three years later, with the emotional travelogue of Still Right Here to show for it.
