SIGN UP FOR SUMMER CLASSES
The Class: THE ARCHITECTURE OF THE LONGBOARD Students will spend five mornings designing and then constructing a high-performance longboard, including trucks, wheels and bearings. This weeklong class is being offered several times over summer break. The cost for the weeklong class is $300.00 and includes all materials and hardware.
What you will do:
Day 1. Design and build the “press” necessary to glue the deck material (Baltic Birch plywood) together.
Day 2. Finish the press & glue-up the deck.
Day 3. Cut & shape the deck. Drill out the drop throughs for the trucks.
Day 4. Finish sanding the deck. Paint / finish coat the deck.
Day 5. Grip and assemble the deck (includes trucks, wheels and bearings).
At the end, what you will have:
1. Your own custom-designed and built high-performance longboard and an enhanced understanding of the physics and material science behind it.
2. Knowledge so you can make more longboards.
Topics covered over the course of the class:
1. Basic and advanced carpentry and manufacturing processes.
2. Materiality and how to change the inherent physics of a material through its physical manipulation.
3. Ergonomics, Physics, Architectural Engineering.
The class will be held at The Community Architecture Lab's fully equipped design / innovation studio @ 209 Essex Street, Salem MA, just a few doors down from the Peabody Essex Museum.
