This will be a unique opportunity to enjoy a performance from one of the world’s leading Tibetan musicians without having to travel across the globe to Dharamshala or Tibet.
Techung and his band combine traditional and contemporary Tibetan music to convey a message of peace, freedom, and courage to help advocate for peace in Tibet and around the world.
Over the last few decades, Chinese authorities have uprooted traditional Tibetan music and used music for propaganda purposes rather than for artistic expression. Tibetan music, culture and arts are under threat. For this reason, Techung has made it his life’s mission to celebrate and rejuvenate the music, language and vulnerable culture of Tibet.
Audiences from around the world have embraced Techung’s sheer talent and message. He can be heard on over 12 solo and collaborative albums. His performances appeal to audiences of all ages. Renowned composer Philip Glass said "Techung is a highly gifted singer, bursting with talent and personality. I think he is an unusually attractive performer and clearly has the potential to appeal to an audience far beyond the ethnic Tibetan community who already know him quite well".
Shortly after China invaded Tibet in 1959, Techung’s parents escaped and joined thousands of Tibetan refugees and the Dalai Lama in Dharamshala, India. At a very early age, Techung was identified as a gifted musician and gained entrance to study at the Tibetan Institute of Performing Arts (TIPA). Since then, Techung has performed around the world over more than 30 years. “Techung is an exceptional Tibetan musical talent,” said Tenzin Tethong, former Representative of His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
During his performances, Techung introduces his songs by explaining the cultural significance and meaning so that attendees with no background in Tibetan music can fully enjoy the show. Audience members routinely find themselves singing along, sometimes even to exotic Tibetan verses. Techung will be joined on stage with Michel Tyabji on percussion, Kito Rodriguez on bass, and Rinzing Wangyal on guitar.
Techung’s main instrument is his voice. But he is also a tremendously gifted player of the long neck lute (Dramnyen), Tibetan fiddle (Piwang) and bamboo flute or (Lingbu). Readers are encouraged to view a compilation of some of Techung’s performances on the internet at http://youtu.be/HPTgd29adnk.
The performance is co-sponsored with Students for a Free Tibet, which works for Tibetan independence and to inspire and enable people, especially youth, to create a just and equitable world, free of oppression, in which there is respect for the earth and all living things. Ticket purchases will help benefit Students for a Free Tibet.
