Fishwagons Place 2nd in Downeast Championship

Last weekend the Fishwagons traveled up to the Maine Maritime Academy in Castine, Maine for the Downeast Invitational. The regatta also served as the Maine State Championship. The team did very well and after two days of racing ended up placing in 2nd, losing only to Yarmouth from Maine. The team mainly placed in the top 8 of the 19 boat fleet and had ten top four finishes. The first day of the regatta was very wind and rainy, with breeze steady at 20 knots with gusts up to 30 knots. The waves and breeze combined made for interesting sailing conditions and most of the boats capsized during the second race of the day which led to the postponement of racing for Saturday. Marblehead skipper Peter Lynn and crew Alex Kerai were one of the few boats who didn’t capsize. They placed 7th in the first place and were in position to end up with a top 3 finish in the second race (just about to round the final mark) when the race was abandoned. It was a sunny, light-breeze day Sunday with 13 races completed overall. Peter Lynn (skipper) and Katie Rodger (crew) sailed A fleet and got four top 4 finishes while in B Fleet Renee Torrie (skipper) and Lily Roberts (crew) sailed to five top four with a first place finish. It was a beautiful second day and the results were spectacular. After neck and neck racing with Yarmouth for most of the day, Yarmouth ended up edging out Marblehead to win the Downeast Championship, but if Marblehead’s second place victory at Downeast is any indication of what’s to come at Massachusetts States on May 21 and 22nd, then the Fishwagons are in a good position to place well at the Championship.
