Flares Reportedly Fired Near Ram Island

The following information was provided by the Marblehead Police Department. Where arrests or charges are mentioned, it does not indicate a conviction.

The following is an excerpt from the Marblehead Police Department's log:

Saturday, Sept. 15:

  • At 7:49 a.m., police conducted a well-being check on Ralph Road.
  • At 8:18 a.m., a Powder House Court resident called police to complain about a neighbor who "leaves loud music on all night."
  • At 9:32 a.m., a resident on Roundhouse Road called police to report that a vacant 1999 Buick Centry parked on their street looked as if someone was living in it.
  • At 10:35 a.m., police responded to a minor motor vehicle accident on Humphrey Street involving a 2006 Mercedes E350 and a 2008 Toyota Highlander.
  • At 10:57 a.m., police responded to a parking complaint near the intersection of Harbor and Ocean avenues.
  • At 11:05 a.m., a man called police to report losing a black suede wallet on State Street sometime Friday night.
  •  At 1:02 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint on Franklin Street.
  • At 1:15 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint on Village Street.
  • At 1:36 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint on Washington Street.
  • At 2:31 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint on Corinthian Lane.
  • At 4:26 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Chestnut Street.
  • At 5:13 p.m., police were alerted to a black pickup truck that was "doing about 60 mph" on Humphrey Street with construction equipment in the back. Police were unable to locate the vehicle.
  • At 5:48 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint on West Shore Drive.
  • At 5:50 p.m., police received word that an elderly woman was driving erratically in a 2010 Hyundai Elantra near the intersection of Humphrey Street and Ralph Road.
  • At 6:17 p.m., police conducted a well-being check on Powder House Court.
  • At 7:24 p.m., a man on Front Street called police to see if his car had been towed.
  • At 7:44 p.m., a resident called police to report that the flag on the first pole on Marblehead Neck was coming down.
  • At 8:04 p.m., a resident called police to report finding an iPod on Old Salem Road.
  • At 8:09 p.m., Swampscott police called the station to report that they had been receiving calls regarding possible flares going off in the area of Ram Island. The local Harbormaster and US Coast Guard reportedly responded to the area just south of Ram Island and Dolphin Island but didn't find anything. The original reporting party told police he saw "15 to 20 flares go off just south" of the islands.
  • At 9:11 p.m., police received word that there was "a large group on Brown's Island." Responding officers reportedly found a small group on the island with tiki torches and a small bonfire.
  • At 9:30 p.m., police responded to a report of a loud gathering in the resident's lot at Devereux Beach. 
  • At 10:07 p.m., police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance on Endicott Avenue.
  • At 10:33 p.m., an intoxicated man on Pleasant Street reportedly called police for help home. The man told police he was drunk and didn't want to drive home. The man was reportedly taken by ambulance to Salem Hospital but left after being sectioned. He was described as "wearing a hospital jonny, gray and brown pants with an IV still in his arm." The man was reportedly located by Salem police.

Sunday Sept. 16:

  • At 12:19 a.m., a motorist on Washington Street called police to report that an erratic operator in a black SUV had just run them off the road.
  • At 1:07 a.m., police conducted a property check on Hillside Avenue.
  • At 1:19 a.m., police responded to a 911 call from a home on Lincoln Avenue.
  • At 1:47 a.m., a woman on Lee Street called police to report "hearing 11 distinct pops toward old town" and "also heard an animal after that." The woman said she feared someone was shooting at a raccoon. Officers determined that a party bus had just arrived in the area and the sounds may have been fireworks.
  • At 5:43 a.m., police responded to a report of two suspicious kids on BMX bikes heading inbound on Pleasant Street.
  • At 11:33 a.m., police responded to a burglar alarm on Village Street.
  • At 12:09 p.m., a resident entered the police station to report losing a "greenish bi-fold wallet with money inside." The wallet reportedly had mountains on the front of it.
  • At 1:33 p.m., a handbag was reportedly found by a merchant on Atlantic Avenue.
  • At 1:37 p.m., the Harbormaster received word that the pilot of an ultralight aircraft got themselves stranded on an island offshore.
  • At 2:04 p.m., a man called police to report that a stray dog ran up to him and he didn't know who it belonged to. The dog was later returned to its owner.
  • At 4:41 p.m., police responded to a report of a loud group on Pleasant Street.
  • At 4:55 p.m., police responded to a parking complaint near the intersection of Front and Union streets.
  • At 5:58 p.m., a Linden Street man called police to report that a cell phone and land line phone had been stolen from his house.
  • At 7:49 p.m., a police vehicle reportedly clipped the mirror of a 2007 Toyota Camry on Elm Street.

Monday, Sept. 17:

  • At 3:57 a.m., a Lehman Road resident called police to report that someone had just rang their rear doorbell, which is in a fenced in yard. Responding officers were reportedly unable to locate anyone in the area.
