Handcuffed Suspect Escapes Marblehead Police--But Not For Long

A handcuffed suspect made a difficult getaway in Marblehead this weekend, but it was short-lived.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — A handcuffed suspect escaped Marblehead police this weekend, but his freedom was short-lived.

The 20-year-old man was allegedly breaking into vehicles in the Old Town area and ran from officers but was captured after a short chase. Handcuffed behind his back, the suspect broke free from an officer, who fell and sustained an injury, police said. The suspect ran off, but a short time later he was located again, missing a shoe and with his hands cuffed in front of his body.

Police did not release the suspect's name. He was charged with resisting arrest and four counts of breaking into a vehicle.

Police credited two passersby with notifying them about the suspect after they said they saw him breaking into cars.

"Without the two alert citizens, these crimes would most certainly have gone undetected until the owners discovered the thefts the next day," police said in a statement.
