Header Girls Ice Masconomet
Marblehead spotted the Chieftains an early goal but stormed back to earn a 3-1 victory Tuesday afternoon at Salem State University.

's girls' hockey team picked up their first win of the season Tuesday afternoon at Salem State University, besting Masconoment 3-1.
The Headers pumped 34 shots on Masconomet’s All-Star goalie Alex Jones, who stopped over 50 shots in a 2-1 Marblehead win last season.
“That’s what we have to do to win, take shots and take care of our own end,” Marblehead coach Emily Hudak said after the game.

The Headers improved to 1-2-0 and take on Gardner tomorrow afternoon in Fitchburg. The girls are back at Salem State University against Auburn Friday afternoon at 2:30 p.m.
Eliza Quigley, Keelin Fallon and Brittany Smith were Marblehead’s top three skaters Tuesday afternoon at both ends of the ice, fore-checking well and keeping the puck away from goalie Sabrina Doughman.

Smith, from Manchester-Essex High School, joins Swampscott’s Katie Zarinksy on this year’s squad, looking to get back into the state tournament.
Doughman gave up an early goal to Kendra Jones, but kept Masco’s leading scorers, Katrina Buchta and Diana Valetti off the score sheet.
Jones opened the scoring at 11:07 of the first period, with Marblehead holding a hefty lead in shots, 15-2, but trailing by one. Jones buried a breakaway, shorthanded, with teammate Emily Mulligan in the box.
Keelin Fallon tied things up with a smooth move across the front of the net with 56 seconds left in the period, snapping a wrist shot past Jones’ stick side to tie it at one. Quigley and Smith set up Fallon, with Masco’s Valetti in the box for tripping.
“Keelin’s goal really gave us a boost, it would have been tough to be behind after we took so many shots in the first period,” Hudak said.
Ally Healy scored the first of her two goals with 5:31 left in the second period, giving the Headers to lead for good. Healy fired a shot under the crossbar from the slot, past Jones’ catching glove, set up by Quigley and Rachel McKay.
The Headers were dominating after two, with the lead and a 25-4 advantage in shots on goal. Masconomet (2-3-0) had more skaters, and bigger players, but Marblehead had the quickness to clog the shooting and passing lanes, keeping the area in front of Doughman clear.
Up by one in the third period, Healy buried her second of the game, once again from Quigley and McKay to give Marblehead a two-goal cushion. Healy crashed the net and backhanded a rebound past Jones with 11:19 to play.
Marblehead was forced to kill off two penalties, down two skaters for 1:16, but Doughman and the penalty killers held the fort. Masconomet’s Becca Cleary went off for tripping with 38 seconds left, and Marblehead ran out the clock.
Header captains for 2011-2012 are seniors Casey McDonald, Ally Healy, Katie Zarinsky and Keelin Fallon.
“It’s good to get the first win, that’s for sure,” Hudak said. “We have to play hard, as a team to be successful, I’m happy for the girls.”
