Header Hockey Wins Season Opener

Marblehead downed the Lynn Jets 10-1 Saturday to open the 2011-2012 season with a victory.

's varsity boys' hockey team opened up the season with a 10-1 romp over the Lynn Jets Saturday afternoon.

“Lynn’s a good team, they were missing one of their top defensemen, the bounces went our way Saturday, and we’re going to have to keep working hard to win games this season,” head coach Bob Jackson said.

Senior co-captain Austin Haley led the way for the Headers with a hat trick, and the other team captain, senior Mike Harper was solid in the net.

Marblehead (1-0) heads to Newton to take on the Newton North Tigers on Monday evening.

“There are a lot of good teams in our league, in the North and the South, so there’s really isn’t a night we can take off and not give our best effort,” Jackson said.

Marblehead graduated 10 seniors from last season’s state champs, and suffered a blow when sophomore Tom Koopman suffered a kidney injury in the football playoffs against Wakefield, and will be out at least until February.

Jackson will be counting on solid play from his alternate captains Ian Maag and Ty Bates until Koopman returns.

Erik Powers scored twice Saturday for Marblehead, Joe Newall, Liam Gillis, Trevor Gelineau, Cam Rowe and Ty Bates each chipped in with a goal in the win over the Jets.

“We’re excited to get going, we’ve got a big test Monday (against Newton North) and we’ve got to be ready with our best effort,” Jackson said.

In Header alumni news, Ryan Dempsey, now at Tilton Academy, suffered a shoulder injury and will miss most of the hockey season there.
