Hidden Wonders of Korea

Free cultural event

Himgham, MA, October 28, 2017 – Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (“KSCPP”) hosted a program on Korean culture and history at Himgham Public Library. Participants watched films on King Sejong the Great (1418–1450) of Korea’s Joseon Dynasty and about the development of Korean economy since the Korean War. The program also included a re-enactment of traditional Korean wedding in full traditional dress.

45 participants attended the program in total. After the program, they were treated to a full, home-cooked traditional Korean meal by KSCPP staff.

KSCPP is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to raising awareness of Korean culture and history. Since 2005, KSCPP has organized over 10,000 presentations in the U.S., Europe, and Korea. At this presentation in Himgham, MA, the attendees learned about King Sejong the Great and his benevolent leadership. King Sejong the Great (1397-1450) was the fourth king of Joseon dynasty Korea whose legacies included the invention of Korean alphabet, the development of science and technology, and the introduction of laws to protect the weak against the strong.

The program also included a documentary on Korea’s economic development since the Korean War, highlighting how the country overcame great adversities such as the period of forced occupation of Korea by Japan, the Korean War, and Asian Financial Crisis of 1997 to finally become one of the seven nations that belong to the “20-50 Club” (nations with per capita income of more than $20,000 with population of over 50 million people).

The attendees were very impressed with King Sejong’s rule and expressed surprise as to why they had never heard of King Sejong’s story before. One attendee remarked, “Everyone should know and read this [King Sejong’s] history, especially people who someday want to be in public service.” Another patron of the library, Mr. Norman Fulton, said King Sejong manifested “What the Bible described as the Fruits of the Spirit, or all of those things that make life on earth more like what God intended to be.”
