Kayaker Attended Marblehead Schools

A state police helicopter and boat are continuing for missing kayaker Maryan Lisovich, 23, of Lynn.

As of 11 a.m. Tuesday the helicopter was off Swampscott and the state police dive team was on the water searching.

Swampscott in town, and the harbormaster and Quincy's police boat have been involved in the search for Maryan since the Coast Guard suspended its massive search on Sunday at sunset.

It was 24 hours earlier, Saturday about 6 pm, that Maryan was by his girlfriend after he paddled off Fisherman's Beach in a kayak toward Lincoln House Point.

He was shirtless and wearing red trunks. 

in Lynn and attended Marblehead schools.

His guardians, from the time he was 11 to 18, were Andrew and Jessica Barnett.

Andrew provided us background information about Maryan.

He was born April 4, 1989 in Lviv, Ukraine, and emigrated to the United States with his mother when he was 6 years old.

He was a Cub Scout with Pack 79 and a Boy Scout with Troop 79 in Marblehead.

He attended the and .

He earned his GED and attended classes at North Shore Community College.

He works at the Salvation Army on Route 1 in Saugus and is working for his emergency medical technician certification. 

While local efforts continue their search efforts, the its search Sunday.

Coast Guard Commander Sean Carroll said at about 6 pm Sunday that continuing to search for the kayaker after dark would not increase the chances that the Coast Guard would find and rescue him, the spokesman said.

After Maryan was reported missing, the maritime service  operation that included two MH-60 helicopters and a Falcon Jet, a cutter with more than 10 crew members, and two other search and rescue boats.

Maryan left in a blue kayak about 4 pm Saturday. He was not wearing a life vest.

He had been with a group of people but was the only one to go into the water with a kayak at that point, a Coast Guard duty officer said earlier. It's possible the group including Maryan may have been kayaking earlier and came in to shore, the duty officer said. 

In any event, Maryan was the only one to go into the water at 4 pm, the duty officer said.

He was to return at 5:30 pm, and when he did not his girlfriend called 911.

The kayaker's blue kayak was found overturned in the surf with a paddle aboard in the area of at 7 p.m. Saturday, the duty officer said.
