MA Approves Local Roads, Bridges, Transit Housing Funding In Marblehead, Swampscott

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Massachusetts lawmakers have approved more than $2.7 billion in bond funding for local road and bridge repairs, public transit infrastructure and transit-oriented housing development across the state.

The package, passed by the Legislature on June 4, was signed by Gov. Maura Healey on Thursday.

Support is also included for all cities and towns through financing for the traditional Chapter 90 program, according to the bill summary provided. A portion of the bonding is intended to especially aid rural communities by distributing support solely based on road mileage.

State Sen. Brendan Crighton (D-Lynn) said the funding responds to winter damage while also backing longer-term transportation needs.

"Municipalities across the Commonwealth are feeling the impact of a brutal winter, with roads, sidewalks, bridges, and culverts in need of serious repair," Crighton said. "This funding addresses those immediate concerns, while balancing long-term investments in our DCR roadways and infrastructure of the MBTA so that people can travel safely throughout Massachusetts."

State Rep. Jenny Armini (D-Marblehead) also pointed to both local and statewide benefits in the package.

"Safe, reliable roads, bridges, and public transit are essential to daily life in cities and towns across the Commonwealth, including our communities," Armini said. "This package delivers critical support for urgent infrastructure needs while making long-term investments in transportation, housing, and connectivity."

With passage in both chambers complete and the governor's signature in place, the bond bill is now authorized as Massachusetts moves ahead with the projects outlined in the legislation.
