Statement from YMCA Executive Director Scott Hitchcock

At approximately 9:15pm on Monday, June 3, one our Y members, a 47-year old male, was swimming laps in our lap pool.

As he approached the shallow end of the pool, one of the guards on duty noticed that he had stopped moving forward.  She immediately determined that the gentleman was in distress. She signaled the other guard on duty to begin a rescue while she summoned 911 and brought over rescue equipment.

The guards extracted the gentleman from the pool and began performing CPR and attached the AED. Paramedics arrived shortly thereafter and transported the gentleman to receive further medical care.

We’re proud of the quick reactions of our lifeguards who followed their training and emergency procedures to quickly rescue and provide care to this gentleman.

While at this hour we do not know the gentleman’s condition, all of us at the YMCA pray for him and his family at this difficult time.
