MANNA PROJECT TO END HUNGER

Two small, diverse congregations in Marblehead have joined together to work toward a mutual goal; feeding the hungry. When both Clifton Lutheran Church and the Temple Sinai looked at their common links, they came together to form the “Manna Project”. On March 4th, 2018, this project will package 2,334 bags of nutritious, dehydrated meals, to be distributed through the Lynn Shelter Association and the New American Center in Lynn. Each of these packages will feed 6 people, for a total of 14,000 meals. Raw materials, equipment, and packing cartons will be provided via EndHunger Northeast and The Outreach Project.org.

The Manna Project came into being in August of 2017, when fundraising plans were made, starting with a Fall Festival in October, held at the Clifton Lutheran Church, and a January Calender Raffle, in which one prize for each day in January was drawn from the tickets purchased. All prizes were donated by either local businesses or members of the congregations. The final phase, the packaging itself, will be held at the Temple Sinai. Recruitment of volunteers to do the assembly-style labor for the packaging has thus far yielded willing hands from Salem State University, the Beverly Bank, two different Boy Scout troops, members of both congregations, and members of the Salem community at large. Other volunteers continue to pour in for this phase of the project.

By working together to be the difference they want to see, these two congregations are seeking to bring community members together toward the positive goal of caring for those in need who are at our very doorstep. Getting to know each other by working together over the better part of the last year has formed a mutual respect and kinship between the two congregations that they hope to share with the community at large.
