Marblehead Jewelry Store Robbed

A Marblehead jewelry store was robbed; police arrested a suspect after a chase.

MARBLEHEAD, MA – A man was arrested Thursday in connection with a daytime robbery at a Marblehead jewelry store earlier that day.

Police responded to the Gold Bug Jewelry Store around 10:30 a.m. after the store's security alarm went off and they received a 9-1-1 call from a nearby business. The store owner told officers the man went behind the counter and took some items from the case.

When the owner confronted him, he allegedly stole items from her purse, grabbed her arm and took her phone to prevent her from calling the police.

Police canvassed the area and found the man hiding behind a bush on a nearby road; after a brief chase on foot, he was taken into custody without incident, police said.

The 44-year-old suspect from Peabody, who has not been identified, is charged with unarmed robbery of a person 60 or over, larceny of property over $250, assault and battery on an elder, intimidation of a witness, receiving stolen property and possession of a Class C substance, hydrocodone - second offense.

He is expected to be arraigned Friday.
