SOUTHBOROUGH, Mass.—Feb. 5, 2020—Marblehead orthodontist Dr. Michael Cognata was presented the Clinician of the Year Award at the Yankee Dental Congress® 2020 (Yankee) Awards Ceremony held January 29 at the Boston Convention & Exhibition Center. The award recognizes New England dentists who have stood out as lecturers and volunteers at the Yankee Dental Congress.

Yankee, New England’s largest dental meeting, is presented by the Massachusetts Dental Society (MDS) in cooperation with the dental societies of Connecticut, Maine, New Hampshire, Rhode Island, and Vermont. More than 26,000 dental health professionals and guests from around the United States attend the annual meeting.

MDS President Dr. Janis Moriarty said, “Dr. Cognata stood out among his peers for his dedication to the profession and service to the Massachusetts Dental Society and the Yankee Dental Congress. He is a skilled clinician and educator, as well as an outstanding mentor for the next generation of dental professionals.”

Dr. Cognata, who currently has offices in Marblehead and Boston, is a graduate of Tufts University School of Dental Medicine and the Harvard-Forsyth Postdoctoral Orthodontic Program. He also earned a Master of Medical Science Degree in oral biology.

Dr. Cognata has more than 35 years of experience in private practice, providing orthodontic care for children and adults with the full spectrum of malocclusions and dentofacial problems. He also has spent more than 28 years on faculty teaching part-time at the Forsyth Dental Center and the Harvard School of Dental Medicine Department of Orthodontics, where he was both director of pre-doctoral orthodontics and clinical instructor of post-doctoral orthodontics.

Dr. Cognata has been a member of the MDS since 1982; he also is a member of the American Dental Association and the North Shore District Dental Society. He has previously served as the East Middlesex District Dental Society chair and secretary, as well as district trustee on the MDS Board of Trustees. As a lecturer at the Yankee Dental Congress for the past decade and a past Yankee general chair, Dr. Cognata has helped provide first-class continuing education and networking opportunities for the dental community.

A past president of the Massachusetts Association of Orthodontists, Dr. Cognata is a fellow in the American College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy, and former secretary of the Harvard Society for the Advancement of Orthodontics. He is a longtime member and past president of the Edward H. Angle Society of Orthodontists, Eastern Component, and a member of the American Association of Orthodontists and the Northeastern Society of Orthodontists.
