Marblehead Police Invite Residents To Join Citizen Academy

MARBLEHEAD, MA — Marblehead police are once again ready to pull back the curtain and show residents the daily ins and outs of what they do to protect the town.

The department will hold its next Citizen Academy on Friday mornings for eight weeks starting on Jan. 7. The academy will run from 9 a.m. to noon with instruction from patrol officers, detectives, 911 dispatchers and ranking officers.

"Come join us for candid discussions about policing including how people come into the police service, the training and equipment used, how traffic enforcement is conducted along with Massachusetts law and investigative techniques," police said.

Site visits during the course include Lynn District Court, the Essex County jail, the regional police academy in Reading and the Marblehead Police Department.

Lt. Dave Ostrovitz said the Marblehead Council on Aging, which is sponsoring the academy, has applications. Some of the courses will take place in the COA's training room.

The academy is open to any resident age 18 and older with a Criminal Offender Record check and driving history check required.

"This is your chance to ask those burning questions that you have never asked but would like to know the answers for," police said.

The academy is limited to 20 students with spaces filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Some activities may be altered if necessary because of coronavirus protocols.
