Marblehead Voters Say 'Yes' to Override
Tuesday's special election asked voters to approve a so-called Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion override.

Marblehead voters have given their OK for a so-called Proposition 2 1/2 debt exclusion override, the funds from which will go toward closing the town’s landfill and building a new transfer station.
Nearly 18 percent of Marblehead’s voters headed to the polls Tuesday. When polls closed at 8 p.m., the overwhelming majority of the 2,600 ballots cast showed support for three overrides, which were combined into a single ballot question.
The unofficial results show that 1,934 people voted ”yes,” and 666 voted “no.”

At the May Annual Town Meeting, voters approved projects proposed by articles 32, 33 and 34 of the warrant, but those projects require about $8 million in additional tax dollars. The special election was held to determine whether voters would agree to the necessary tax increase.
Before the election, Marblehead Town Administrator John McGinn told The Salem News that the override will add just under $53 to the average property tax bill each year for 20 years.
