Marblehead Voters Will Consider Overrides in June Special Election

The town will hold a special election to address a Proposition 2 1/2 override needed to fund actions taken at the May town meeting.

Marblehead voters are being asked to decide whether they’ll agree to a higher tax rate in order to fund the actions approved by town meeting voters in early May.

During the May Annual Town Meeting, voters approved three articles having to do with the town’s landfill and new transfer station building. In order for the work of those articles to be accomplished, voters must now approve funding that would come from a Proposition 2 1/2 override.

Voters will be asked to vote “Yes” or “No” on the text of the following ballot question in the June 16 special election:

Question 1: Shall the Town of Marblehead be allowed to exempt from the provisions of proposition two and one-half, so-called, the amounts required to fund Articles 32, 33 and 34 of the 2015 Annual Town Meeting to pay for the bonds issued for the purposes of repairing and/or replacing the existing 60-inch concrete drainage culvert that crosses the landfill property, including investigations, engineering, construction, and all other activities and costs necessary to carry out the work; work necessary to remove, relocate, or dispose of solid waste in areas beyond the limit of work in the current landfill closure project including investigations, engineering, legal fees, construction, easements and/or property acquisition, and all other activities and costs necessary to carry out the work; and permitting, public bidding, site work, utility work, deconstruction of the old Transfer Station and construction of the new Transfer Station, and all other activities and costs necessary to carry out the work all in connection with the clean-up related to the historic operations of the former landfill?

Polls will be open from 7 a.m.-8 p.m. on June 16.
