Youth Football Continues To Dominate In Week 2

MYFL continued to show great skill on the gridiron last weekend as many of its teams improved to 2-0.

JV-C Headers 24, Lynnfield 0

Luke Anderson scored a pair of touchdowns and the Marblehead JV-C Headers' defense recorded its second straight shutout, defeating Lynnfield, 24-0, Saturday at Dr. Stanford W. Hopkins Field.
In the first quarter, Anderson sprinted 30 yards down the left sideline and just beat a defender to the pylon for his first touchdown of the game. Tucker Braun added a 2-point conversion.
Ben Murtagh scored on a 35-yard run and Ben McCarthy added a 2-point coversion to put the Headers on top, 16-0, at halftime.
A good kick return by Douglas Elston gave the Headers excellent field position to open the second half, and Anderson scored on a 2-yard plunge after a 20-yard gain on a reverse by Will Murtagh and some tough running by Will Thompson. McCarthy went untouched into the end zone for the 2-point conversion.
The offensive line, including Nat Boyce, Jack Boyce, Ryan Dumais, Mitchell Godes, Will Bosworth and Elston, opened big holes for the backs all game long.
Defensively, Elston saved a touchdown in the first half by dragging down a runner from behind, and Braun recovered a fumble. Bosworth knocked down a lateral, which he nearly recovered, and Augie Venzal made several tackles behind the line of scrimmage. George Ryan also had an outstanding game at defensive end.
The Headers' outside linebacking corps of Jake Fitzgerald, Evan Ferriere, Anderson and Thompson helped contain Lynnfield's running attack, while Mason Friedman came up from his safety position to make several tackles and help keep Lynnfield off the scoreboard.

Red Squad Falls to a Danvers 16-12

The Marblehead Red squad traveled to Deering Stadium to challenge the Falcons of Danvers on Sunday. After a deep drive by the Marblehead Red team that ended short of the goal line due in part to costly penalties early on, Danvers successfully cashed in on a sustained drive of their own, converting the extra point for an 8-0 lead late in the first half.

Anthony Ruggiero exploded or a 65-yard rush downfield to get Marblehead on the board with his first of two touchdowns on the day. A failed conversion left the Red squad trailing 8-6 at the half.

Both teams turned the ball over on downs to start the second half before Danvers again marched the length of the field to tack on eight more points for a 16-6 advantage. Ruggiero scored his second TD of the afternoon to pull the Red squad within four points, but that is all Marblehead would get.

Defensive end Alex Myers played exceptionally in the second half, while Eli Smith and Josh Dicker were a solid duo at quarterback.

Next Sunday the Red Squad takes on Winthrop at 9:00 a.m. at home at Hopkins Field.

The Black Squad Blows Out Amesbury 42-0

The Black Squad welcomed Amesbury to town for their home game Sunday at Hopkins Field.

Marblehead's offense was unstoppable in the early going, capping each of its first three possessions with touchdowns. Spencer Craig and Owen Rockett highlighted the offense in the first half, with Craig rushing for two TD's and Rockett scoring one each of the passing and rushing variety.

Brooks Tyrell continued the onslaught for Marblehead with a 70-yard kickoff return to start the second half. Rockett then added two more rushing touchdowns later in the half on plays of 10 yards each, giving the Black team a 42-0 win.

The Black team hosts Danvers Sunday at Hopkins Field at noon.

B-Team Improves to 2-0

The 7th grade squad picked up its second win of the year with a 28-6 showing against Hamilton-Wenham on Sunday. The Marblehead defense made the HW's offense work hard to no avail, stuffing the run and forcing multiple turnovers throughout the game.  Liam Coughlin, Beau Dana and Jeremy Dingle each lassoed an interception in the game, and the Generals were able to score only on a special teams play in the second half.

Mark Cohen,  Beau Dana, Crew Whittier and Oliver Sanders each scored in a balanced attack for Marblehead, while Matt Adams completed a two-point conversion in the first half.

JV-C Whips Shut-out North Reading 14-0

The defensive story line continued for Marblehead in the JV-C team matchup against North Reading, as the Whips allowed just one first down in a 14-0 victory.

Henry Mitrano got the scoring started for Marblehead with a 6-yard run, capping a run-heavy first drive for the Whips to end the first quarter. The second quarter held much of the same, as the staunch Marblehead defense refused to budge and Seamus Keaney scampered for a 25-yard TD run. With a successful two-point conversion, the Whips took a 14-0 lead into the halftime break.

The Whips were unable to put more points on the board, but thanks to a tremendous team effort defensively, they held on for a well-deserved win.

Navigators Come up Short 6-0

Marblehead and Danvers played to a 6-0 final in a game highlighted by sound defensive efforts by both squads.

Tom Cronin showed flashes of brilliance at quarterback for the Marblehead offense, while Davis Walker dominated play on both sides of the ball in the second half. The Marblehead secondary, anchored by Emmet Janney, Tyler Boes and Davis Walker, had an impressive showing on the afternoon.

The lone score of the game was recorded on a long run by Danvers

Marblehead threatened to score as the game neared completion, but time expired before they could finish their drive.

Mariners Take Their Home Opener Against the Knights 14-0

The Mariners shutout performance was an effort, as Dewey Millet, Chandler Capshaw, Patrick Sweetnam and Sam Thorne forced multiple stops for negative yardage.

The Mariners scored on their second possession of the game on a QB sneak by DJ Migliore to jump out to an early 6-0 lead. Running backs Derek Marino, John Uhrich, Korey Cohan, Justin Boes, and Dan Doherty shared the load of carries on the drive.

Showing some flair and a willingness to take chances, Marblehead attempted a late-quarter flee flicker that resulted in a positive gain to the N. Andover red zone before time expired on the half.

The Mariners later went on an eight play, 70-yard drive that was feuled by the efforts of Marino, Cohan and Boes. John Uhrich finished the drive with a 3-yard TD run and Marino converted the 2-point conversion to put the game out of reach at 14-0.

The D-Team Whips Shut Down Mill City

The D-Whips were victorious again this past Sunday shutting out the Mill City 2 Team 18-0.

The offensive line for the Whips out worked the Mill City line despite facing a disadvantage in size.   Tight Ends Connor Elliott and Nick Reulbach were perfect containing the outside as Jaedon Evans and Malcom Barclay helped open up the left side for big gains.  Center Robbie Segee, Left Gaurd Will Savage and Left Tackle Jack Curran were once again outstanding allowing the Whips to pound the middle for big gains from a trio of backs.

The Whips scored on their opening drive on an end around by Ryan Harris from QB Finn Keaney. Harris' second touchdown was setup by a  big run by Jake Miller on the following possession.  The Whips final score of the game came on another sweep with Ryan Harris going the distance for his third TD of the game, as the offensive line buillied the Mill City defense and Jake Miller made a booming downfield block on the play.

Defensive Ends Jack Curran and Finn Keaney were a disruptive force on the outside as the linebacking core of Jake Miller, Chris Galley, Connor Elliott, Ryan Harris and John Manzi swarmed to make big tackles and hold Mill City to just 3 first downs all day.

D-Headers Clip Falcons 30-8

With both teams bearing down on defense for most of the first half, Wes Rockett found the end zone for the first three TDs late in the first half to give Marblehaed the early and final lead of the game against Masco 3

After two more Rockett scores to break the game open, Sean McCarthy added a touchdown of his own. The score was followed by a Sam Rockett to Ryan Tarmey pass for a two-point conversion.

Desite the impressive offensive attack for the Headers, the defensive unit cannot be overlooked. The Headers have surrendered only eight points through two games.

Evan Kosar, who left the game to seek medical attention for a frightening head injury, was given a clean bill of health and is expected to return this week.
