Meltdown in Marblehead [VIDEO]

If you were among the local sports fans who left 's varsity football game against Newburyport early Thursday night, you missed one of the most improbable comebacks in Piper Field history.

Although the Magicians led 20-0 at halftime and 26-7 late in the fourth quarter, the Clippers put 21 straight points on the board and found the end zone with just 21 seconds left to steal a win on the road.

Marblehead falls to 3-2 with the loss last night, and will have to wait until Oct. 21 to get that bad taste out of their mouths when they take on the Fishermen in Gloucester.

“We wasted a great game by Quig (running back Will Quigley) and Brian (sophomore Brian Daly),” quarterback Gus Percy said.

Quigley scored twice on the ground and Daly scampered into the end zone twice, once on a 70-yard touchdown pass from Percy and again on a 30-yard touchdown pass from Ian Maag.

The Magicians were confident heading into last night’s game after a solid 22-19 win over Hingham last week.

Marblehead has a bye week next week, and won’t take the field until the Gloucester game at Newell Stadium on Oct. 21. The Fishermen lost to Masconomet last night 20-15.

Marblehead has wins against Ipswich, Hingham and Pentucket to go with their two losses to Winthrop and Newburyport. The Magicians head out on the road for games against Gloucester, Salem and Danvers, before wrapping up the 2011 season at home against Beverly on Nov. 11, and Thanksgiving against the Big Blue.

Swampscott remained undefeated with a 24-23 win at Blocksidge Field Thursday night over Triton in the first night football game in Swampscott. A local contractor donated lights for the game.

Triton had fourth and goal with 5:40 to play, but Viking quarterback Blaise Whitman fumbled the snap giving the ball to the Big Blue (5-0) on downs.

No doubt there will be some intense practices coming up for the Marblehead High football team this week.

“Very frustrating game,” Percy said. “We’ve got to play better.”
