The MHS cross-country teams both competed in the Newburyport Clipper Classic relays at Maudslay State Park in Newburyport this past Saturday. At the event teams comprised of high-school athletes competed in a 3 by 2-mile relay race.
The Marblehead girls entered 7 groups in the 139 team competition. They finished in 132, 91, 76, 49, 38, 18, and sixth place. In 38th place were junior Carly Robb and seniors Kate Hewig and Rachel Henige, who finished with a time of 43:18. Freshman Molly Depew and juniors Chloe Heskett and Lillian Johnston placed 18th, finishing in 40:23.

The top team for the Lady Magicians was made up of senior Claire Depew and juniors Mary Kauffman and Madeline Piela. They finished their 6-mile relay in 38:17, taking sixth place.
Coach Jennifer Emblidge was happy with her team's performance, saying "They had some close races and really pulled through in the end. It was a good start to what I hope to be a very successful season."

The MHS boys cross-country team also competed at the relays, entering 10 teams in a 195 team field. Their teams finished 188, 162, 143, 114, 94, 73, 46, 36, 31, and 14. Nate Fowler (11:23), Greg Worth (11:17) and Mike Harper (11:11) claimed 31st place, with a time of 33:55. Finishing just before that trio, in 31st, were Noah Bitterman (10:52), Kevin McElroy (11:23) and Will Herlihy (11:27), whose combined time was 33:47. Heny Pratt (11:08), James Wigglesworth (10:11) and Patrick Casey (11:04) were the top finishers for the Boys team, landing in 14th with a time of 32:26.
Even though his runners didn't break the top ten, Coach Brian Heenan was very impressed with what he saw from his team, saying, "They faced some of the best teams in the state (Peabody, St. John's Prep, Methuen, Lowell…) and they held their own."
He lauded Bitterman's leg of his relay as a "breakout performance," while the 10:11 mark put up by Wigglesworth is the fastest time any Marblehead runner has ever posted on this course. Both teams compete again tomorrow, in a dual-meet at Saugus.
