MHS Girls' Soccer Ready For a Winning Season [VIDEO]

With 15 players returning this season, coach Tracy DeLuca has her soccer team focused on a spot in the state tournament.

's girls’ soccer team was happy to be back at practice Wednesday after soundly defeating Revere 4-1 in a preseason scrimmage Tuesday afternoon.

It still may be very early in the preseason, but Revere’s coach Natalie Lyons said she liked what she saw from the Magicians.

“They’ve got a lot of height up front and a lot of athleticism, I don’t think we won a head ball all afternoon,” Lyons said. “They passed the ball very well, long passes and short passes, and they kept our goalie very busy.”

Marblehead coach Tracy DeLuca is entering her second season at the helm and is coming off a disappointing 3-10-3 season.

“We had a lot of injuries last season, especially to the seniors,” DeLuca said. “We’ve got a lot of girls coming back, they’ve come back in good shape and we’re ready to get going.”

DeLuca has Sarah Henderson as her assistant coach, and Noah Pasackow will handle the junior varsity team.

“The girl’s worked very hard in the off-season, they had good captain’s practices, they’re all running six minute miles, they have a good attitude and everyone’s excited for the 2011 season,” Henderson said.

Marblehead is strong in the net, DeLuca calls goalie Cassie Rodgers “one of the best goalies in the state,” and the team has strong leadership from co-captains Megan Stanojev, Kathryn DiGiammarino and Lindsey Cohen.

In addition to the returning players, DeLuca has some freshman that will push for playing time. Eliza Quigley scored the third Marblehead goal Tuesday, assisted by another freshman Mia Bongiorno. Quigley’s goal gave Marblehead a 3-1 lead. Sarah Katz, Stanojev and Emily Freedland scored the other Header goals.

“We’re counting on Gabby Carrick to bounce back after she was injured last year, and we have a lot of younger players who are going to pushing the older players for playing time,” DeLuca said.

This season, the team's shirts say "kick it" on the back and the girls will have two more opportunities to "kick it" in scrimmages before the season opens on Sept. 14 at home against Bishop Fenwick.

Marblehead will travel to Lynnfield on Friday to play the Pioneers at 4 p.m., and then will host the Saugus Sachems at Hopkins Field on Wednesday, Sept. 7, in their final pre-season tune up.

Players competing for playing time on the varsity and junior varsity teams this season include: Nora Rosen, Riley Sugarman, Jesse Pearce, Heather Purchase, Jackie Burke, Mary Leggett, Michaela LeBlanc, Sara Katz, Jess Attridge, Hannah Dobrusin, Mollysue Migrane, Jamie Ponsetto, Ellyn Needel, Olivia Babine, Izzy Anderson, Mia Sweeney, Ally Bisegna, Paige Ferucci, Kaitlin McCarthy, Monica Thorne, Sydney Cayen, Caroline Helmes, Emily Freedland, Cassie Rodgers, Alex Maulden, Kylie Fisher, Lucia Chalek, Becca Unterborn, Meggie Collins, Cailin Daly, Gabby Carrick, Megan Stanojev, Kathryn DiGiammarino, Lindsey Cohen, Sarah Rizos, Olivia Sahovey, Eliza Quigley, Carolyn McGrath, Audrey Meakin, Olivia Mitrano, Mia Bongiorno, Kelly Mealey, Hana Lombardi, Lindsey Marden, Rachel Katz, Zoe Daher, Faith Ferucci, Lilly Evans, Courtney Dinsmore, Maddie Anderson, Kelsey Murray, Meghan Detels, Iryna Polunina, Paige Thibert, Kelsey Murray, Cecelia Moran, Maia Minelli, Sara Kryple, Emma Barbera, Abby LeBlanc and Jessica Beringer.
