MLT to host Youth Auditions for "GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE"

Marblehead, Mass. – Marblehead Little Theatre will be conducting youth auditions for the children’s roles in its upcoming production of "GYPSY: A MUSICAL FABLE" on Sunday, April 10, from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Jewish Community Center, 4 Community Rd., in Marblehead.

Registration information and the registration form to audition for roles portraying children 8 to 14 years old are available at mltlive.com.

Non-equity youth actors should sign-up for a singing time slot and be prepared to attend a dance call only if asked to attend. The dance calls will be held on Tuesday, April 12, 6 to 9 p.m. at Marblehead Little Theatre, 12 School St., Marblehead.

Youth actors should prepare a verse and a chorus of a song in the style of the show. Sheet music should be brought to the audition and an accompanist will be provided.

For the dance call, actors should bring appropriate shoes and taps if owned. A short combination in the style of the show will be taught.

Please note: All actors and staff must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 for this production and must bring proof of vaccination to the audition.

The show’s rehearsal dates are May 16th through June 23rd, Monday through Thursdays 6:30 – 9:00 p.m. and Sundays 1-5 p.m. Not everyone will be needed at every rehearsal.

The tech rehearsals are scheduled for June 15 and 16, 9 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Only one day may be needed. However, June 16 is required.

Performances are scheduled for June 24 through July 3. Specific dates and times are posted on mltlive.com.

Regarded by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created, GYPSY is the ultimate tale of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearning for her own. Set all across America in the 1920s and 30s, when vaudeville was dying and burlesque was born, Arthur Laurents’ landmark show explores the world of two-bit show business with brass, humor, heart, and sophistication.

The celebrated score by Jule Styne and Stephen Sondheim boasts one glorious hit after another, including: “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Let Me Entertain You,” “Some People,” “You’ll Never Get Away from Me,” “If Momma Was Married,” “All I Need Is the Girl,” “You Gotta Get A Gimmick,” “Small World,” and “Together Wherever We Go.”

The roles available for youth are:

Baby June: (about 10) is a Shirley Temple-like up-and-coming vaudeville star, and Madam Rose’s youngest daughter. Her onstage demeanor is sugary-sweet, cute, precocious and adorable to the nth degree. An adorable character – Mama Rose’s shining star. Strong child singer, strong dancer and taps.

Young Louise: (about 12) She should look a couple years older than Baby June. She is Madam Rose’s brow-beaten oldest daughter, and has always played second fiddle to her baby sister. She is shy, awkward, a little sad and subdued; she doesn’t have the confidence of her sister. Strong acting skills needed. The character always dances slightly out of step but the actress playing this part must be able to dance.

Children’s Ensemble: (to play ages 10 -12) Two or three young boys and girls. Baby June’s back up dancers and singers. Ability of one child to play accordion or clarinet a plus. Must sing and dance.
