One day only! Sculpture to be built at Goldthwait Reservation
Monday, July 19, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Public is invited to watch the construction, talk to the artists and interact with the sculpture.
Marblehead, Mass. — Within an amazing 12-hour period, a 100-foot wooden sculpture will be constructed and deconstructed on Goldthwait Reservation Beach in Marblehead on Monday, July 19, from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., reaching its peak between noon and 2 p.m.
The pop-up art, designed by Marblehead native Jeremy Barnett and his New York-based creative partner Jason Maracani, uses a series of five serpentine arches in pursuit of the ocean’s edge. The piece will start above the high water mark at dawn and grow down the beach as the tide recedes.
The artists are committed to the principle that public art should be accessible and interactive. In that spirit, the public is invited to have conversations with the artists throughout the building process.

Respecting the beauty of Goldthwait and the imperative need for conservation and sustainability, the deconstruction process will be very intentional: all wood and structural components will be carefully removed from the site and stored for re-use on another project in Marblehead. It is the artists’ hope that this will be the first in a series of installations to explore Marblehead’s natural beauty and unique historic significance through the lens of contemporary public art.
Barnett was responsible for the large painted canvases and for the children’s art canvases that were displayed on the front of Marblehead Little Theatre and for the large canvas presented on the Arnould Gallery last summer. He is also a member of The Chamber of Commerce’s Public Art Committee.

This will be Maracani’s first New England installation. The partnership has collectively constructed public art throughout the American Midwest, Iceland, Scotland, Spain, and Thailand.
The artists are grateful to The Goldthwait Reservation’s board of directors for their approval of this project.
Goldthwait Reservation Beach is located on Goldthwait Road off of Atlantic Avenue. For more information about Barnett, visit jeremybarnett.com. For more information about Maracani, visit jasonmaracani.com. For more information about Goldthwait Reservation, visit goldthwait.org.
