Pumpernickel Puppets will perform Three Billy Goats Gruff and The Lion and the Mouse on Sunday, January 25 at 10:30 a.m. at Cohen Hillel Academy in Marblehead. Doors will open at 10 a.m. for pre-show craft activities for the children. The event, most appropriate for families with children ages 2.5 to 6, is free and open to the public.
John McDonough and his puppets present more than 250 performances a year of adaptations of classic folk and fairy tales at schools, libraries, and private parties throughout New England. For each production, McDonough designs and creates all of his own colorful puppets, which range from small hand puppets to larger than life-size figures. With live voices, sound effects, and fast-paced scripts, McDonough says he aims not only to entertain but also to stimulate children’s imagination and creativity. Each performance includes audience participation and a post-performance demonstration to offer insight into what happens behind the scenes.
Pumpernickel Puppets have appeared at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC, the Center for Puppetry in Atlanta, GA, and the International Festival of Puppetry sponsored by the Jim Henson Foundation of New York.
