On February 24th the Marblehead Democratic Town Committee is sponsoring “The Rise of Free Trade Versus Economic Nationalism: Is There a Pattern?”—an historical perspective on the global shift back and forth between free trade and economic nationalism.
Speaker, Linda Andros, J.D. LLM, served as an international trade attorney for over 20 years. She will describe the rise of free trade during the Industrial Age and ultimately its descent into protectionism, economic nationalism, and two world wars. The discussion will then turn to the resurgence of free trade in the aftermath of WWll. Currently, under the Trump Administration, economic nationalism is again on the rise in the U.S. but also around the globe. Ms. Andros will address these historical developments and the question, “Is there a pattern we can discern?”
As Attorney Adviser at the U.S. Dept. of Commerce in the Import Administration, she handled the largest trade case ever brought by the United States on imports of crude oil from all the major crude oil producers in the world. She also negotiated a steel trade agreement with the Government of Ukraine. As Senior Counsel in D.C. for a leading law firm, Ms. Andros brought trade cases for U.S. industries and workers to stop unfair trading of imports, in particular from China. She also handled the largest trade case on record in terms of value ($6 billion) against Canadian lumber imports, which she argued before a NAFTA trade panel. Now retired, Ms. Andros practiced law for over 30 years, most recently serving as Senior Legislative Counsel and lobbyist at the United Steelworkers (USW).
Other speakers: Congressional candidate Angus McQuilken, https://www.angusforcongress.com/ and Rick Jakious, District Director for CD 6, Congressman Moulton's Office https://moulton.house.gov/
This event is open to all and will take place at 7PM on Monday, February 24, at the Marblehead Community Center.
