In 2013, nearly 300 people, many with their dogs, gathered at Chandler Hovey Park on a beautiful fall day for a 5K around Marblehead Neck. They raised over $15,000 for New England animal shelters and rescue organizations that day. The occasion was the Goodness Gracious Run for Rescue. On Saturday, Oct. 18, many will be returning for the third annual run-walk event. Organizers hope to make this another successful fundraiser for local animal rescue groups including the Friends of Marblehead’s Abandoned Animals.
The event is the creation of Marblehead’s pet-treat maker, Goodness Gracious. Race organizer, Amy Renz, promises goodie bags and T-shirts to the first 200 registrants. Registration is available now online at Run4Rescue.org or starting at 10:30 a.m. on the day of the event. According to organizers, it’s best to register online ahead of time to have a chance of getting the free perks.
Food, prizes, music, and a costume contest for the doggies are also on the days schedule. Registration begins at 10:30.
“Goodness Gracious isn’t the only business in town with a soft-spot for animal welfare”, Renz-Havens noted. This year’s Run for Rescue is also sponsored by over a dozen community stewards, including Worldly Pets, Creature Comforts/Pawsitively Marblehead, Atlantic Veterinary Hospital, Marblehead Bank, National Grand Bank, Café Vesuvius, Crosby’s Market, RC Havens and Sons Inc., Day of the Dog in Salem and Fraffie Welch.
