Save the Glover! Raises $10K In Historic Preservation Campaign

The group said it has raised close to $500,000 in donations and pledges toward its goal of $2 million by the end of 2026.

SWAMPSCOTT, MA — Save the Glover! campaign organizers said two January fundraisers raised more than $10,000 toward a goal of $2 million to help preserve the historic Swampscott farmhouse that was once home to Revolutionary War General John Glover.

The group has raised close to $500,000 in donations and pledges toward its goal of $2 million by the end of 2026.

The first fundraiser took place on Jan. 24 at the Marblehead VFW Post 2005, featuring the lively musical quartet, Scurvy Fellows Indeed, who entertained the crowd dressed as authentic pirates while singing traditional sea chanteys.

More than 60 attendees packed the "Bunker," the lower-level bar at the VFW on West Shore Drive.

The band donated their entire tip jar to Save the Glover, and Glover's Marblehead Regiment member Seamus Daly contributed his winnings from half of the 50/50 raffle. Attendees also showed their support by making donations and purchasing the new Save the Glover hats.

The second event, held on Jan. 31, followed Glover's Marblehead Regiment's annual march to Burial Hill, commemorating the 229th anniversary of General John Glover's death on Jan. 30, 1797.

Glover's final home was the farmhouse in Vinnin Square, Swampscott, which Save the Glover! is actively raising funds to preserve. The march concluded at Glover's former in-town home, a National Historic Landmark in Marblehead’s Glover Square.

This event, attended by about 50 people, was hosted at the nearby Landing Restaurant, where Robert Simonelli, partner and general manager, generously donated a percentage of the bar and meal tabs.

Eight-year-old Ranaveer Kalapala, a history aficionado and student at Paul Doyon Elementary School in Ipswich, donated his winning half of the 50/50 raffle to Save the Glover!

The event also saw significant contributions by sponsors, including a $5,000 donation at the defined "General" Level and another "Colonel" Level donation of $2,500.

These larger donations, along with hat sales and the raffle, helped push the total raised at both events to over $10,000.
