Seaside Sweep for Marblehead Runners
The Marblehead Middle School boys' and girls' cross-country teams both raced to victory over Pickering-Marshall of Lynn yesterday at Seaside Park.
With the majority of Wednesday’s athletic events postponed due to Tuesday morning's flash flooding, Marblehead Middle School runners took center stage as they took on Pickering-Marshall at .
Both teams won in impressive fashion. The girls’ team took six of the top seven spots and the boys went six for six at the top of their race.
Seventh grader Emma Bushman finished first for the girls, crossing the finish line in 9:54; while P. J. Roy broke the tape first for the boys, finishing in 9:09.

“Just a great job by all the kids, really,” track coach Bill McCarthy said. “They work very hard in practice and it showed today on the course.”
McCarthy has been coaching at the middle school in Marblehead, both boys' and girls' teams, for the last 10 years. Both teams improved to 3-1 on the season with Wednesday’s win over Pickering-Marshall.

Pickering’s Haley Paige finished just behind Bushman, preventing Marblehead from grabbing the first six spots in the girls’ race.
“It was a little cool today, but the kids started out well and were able to keep up a good pace,” McCarthy said.
Maura Honan, Megan Ryan, Megan McCarthy, Kelsey Detels and Perry Byrne took third through seventh place for the Magicians. Bushman, Ryan, Detels and McCarthy are seventh graders, Honan and Byrne are in the eighth grade.
Finishing behind Roy in the boys’ race were Jarred Rokinos, Jack Garrett, Pete Morrison, Danny Gieniezcko and Liam Tubridy. Tubridy is in the seventh grade; the rest of the group is in the eighth grade.
“The kids really worked hard, I was very pleased with the results today,” McCarthy said.
The two teams are back in action next Wednesday, when they host Beverly at 3:45 p.m.
