Softball Team Closing in on State Tournament

The Marblehead High School softball team is playing well, when they can play, and need one more win to qualify for the playoffs.

The Marblehead High School softball team has put together a record of nine wins against four losses so far in the 2011 softball season. The girls play in the Northeastern Conference, South Division.

Home games are played at Veteran's Field, behind the middle school, on Pleasant Street.

Coach Johnny Gold, in his sixth year at the helm of Header softball, likes his team and how they’ve been playing, even though the weather has made playing games and holding practices tough this season.

“It’s New England, you know that there will be rainy days in May and April,” Gold said. “It’s been tough getting on the field for practices and games, it seems like we’ve has more indoor practices than outdoor practices this season.”

Marblehead has two big Northeastern Conference games on tap, Monday at home against a powerful Danvers team at 4 p.m., and Tuesday at 4 p.m. at home against the Peabody Tanners.

“We’ve played well this year, “ Gold said. “We’ve got a lot of contributions from a lot of different players, Sarah (Hastings) has been outstanding on the mound for us.”

Hastings, a senior co-captain, has a record of 8-4 on the season. Freshman Michaela LeBlanc has made the most of her opportunities to pitch, and has a 1-0 mark so far this year.

Marblehead lost NEC games to a very strong Lynn Classical team, the Salem Witches and the Saugus Sachems. Everett knocked the girls off in a non-conference game.

The Headers play Everett and Malden, two teams outside of the NEC, to comply with a requirement from the MIAA (Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association) that all teams schedule four games a season against non-conference foes.

Freshman Olivia Vener and junior Maggie Hermann have hit home runs for Marblehead this season. Junior catcher Carly Score leads the team with a .540 batting average after 13 games.

Junior Kathryn DiGiammarino has 14 stolen bases on the year and she sports a .410 batting average.

Joining coach Gold on the bench this season are Dave Kalpin, Ron Leary and Todd Norman.
