Hockey coach Bob Jackson and an enthusiastic bunch of young athletes took part in a hockey camp last week at the Green Street Playground.

The final day of the Marblehead Summer Hockey Camp wrapped up with a spirited street hockey game at the Green Street playground Friday morning. The one-week session was filled with hockey players and kids who had never picked up a hockey stick.

A second session is slated for August.

The program featured dry-land training, hockey drills, street hockey games, agility drills and exercises players can do at home to get in good hockey shape.

“We have hockey players from the girls team and the boys team who have come down to help out with the program, they’ve been a big help making this a successful week,” Jackson said.

Eliza Quigley from the girl’s varsity team and Ian Magg from the boys team were on hand Friday to work with the kids. During the week several members of the current boys and girls teams showed up to help as well as Jake Kulevich, Ryan Dempsey and Chris McLeod, graduating seniors who helped steer

“This session was great,” Jackson said. “We’ve got another session coming up, and I encourage kids to sign up through the Parks and Recreation Department for that camp in August.”

“We showed the kids how to work on their agility, build up their leg muscles and showed them several drills they can do at home that don’t cost a thing,” Jackson said.

Charlie Rubin and Christian Hennigan were just two of the goalies that squared off during the street hockey game that brought the session to a close. The Red team claimed that they won, but the Black team was sure that they won the high scoring affair.

All of the participants received a certificate acknowledging their participation in the program at the conclusion of Friday’s activities, with several of the kids wishing that the next session was starting on Monday, not in August.

“We had a lot of fun this week,” Jackson said. “We had some soccer players, some lacrosse players as well as the hockey players who came to get in shape and works on some skills.”

“We try to make it fun, to show the kids how to play, but also enjoy hockey,” Maag said.

Children can sign up for the second hockey camp that starts in August through the Parks and Recreation Department.
