The water pipes were frozen the previous night and were thawed out in the morning. During the day, the people in the house smelled smoke but could not locate the source. Man Wins Several Prizes: Mr. Wallace Haley of this town won a gold cup as prize in the intercollegiate meet at the Boston College last Friday night. Mr. Haley, who is a student at the Boston College High School, class of 1908, has an enviable reputation as an athlete. Mr. Haley's strong point is running and he is a member of a crack relay team.
Ran Nail in His Foot: Mr. Woodfin Bartlett of the ran a nail into his foot at the fire at Clifton last Saturday morning. He was trying to uncouple some hose and inadvertently stepped upon an upturned nail. HE was take home and the injury attended to. Mr. Bartlett is attending to his regular duties again, but walks with a slight limp. One of the other firemen spoiled a pair of boots upon the same nail, but it did not penetrate the skin.
Heating by Electricity: Scientists have settled among themselves, that hot body differs from a cold body in that the very small particles or molecules, of which it is composed, are in a state of rapid to-and-fro motion or oscillation. Increasing the temperature only serves to increase the violence of these molecular vibrations until the body is melted down or evaporated. Heat by electricity is no exception to the above principles. In the transmission of coal energy to heat there is always a great loss, while electricity energy can always be converted entirely to heat. This fact alone was sufficient enough for scientists to develop electric heaters and cooking devices.
