This Week in Marblehead History: 1915

Every week, Marblehead Patch digs through the Marblehead Messenger microfilm archives at Abbot Public Library to find out what was happening on this week in local history.

On this week in 1915:

New Police Telegraph System: The outside boxes for the police signal system have been shipped and will be installed next week so that the entire system should be in working order by the week following. The outside wiring was completed several months ago and the desk with full equipment has been installed. One of these devices even prints on the tape the year, month, day, hour and minute a report comes in.

Sunshine Malted Milk Biscuits: We are pleased to announce that we are again able to offer these crisp dainty biscuits on Pleasant Street in Marblehead - rich with malted milk and fresh from the ovens of the big Sunshine Bakery. Attractive new shape, about 150 to the pound. A very satisfactory biscuit for all occasions.

Marblehead Neck: The cold weather of the early part of the week sent home a large number of the summer dwellers at the Neck. The Boylston and Samoset closed last Monday and the Oceanside on Wednesday. Among those who have gone home this week are: Mrs. George S. Poole, C.M. Barker, Vaughn Jealous, F.H. Richards, James B. Noyes, H.E. Clark, M.F. Santry, E.A. Shuman, Robert Stone, Wendell Weston, F.L. Ripley, William B. Cowen, Dr. George Percy, F.N. Bushnell, Mrs. Carroll D. Wright, Hon. Charles F. Brown, Miss Amy Harrison, William P. McMullan, Miss Elizabeth Mims and J.J. Martin.

Swimming Pool Sanitation: 91 large municipalities in the United States have established public swimming pools to meet the demand for knowledge of swimming. Swimming pools are on the increase. The United States Public Health Service publishes an article by Wallace A. Manheimer, Ph.D., of Columbia University, on the results obtained from a close examination of six swimming pools that showed that typhoid fever, conjunctivitis and other diseases are being spread.

Camp-Fire at Abbot Hall: On Saturday, Oct. 9, there will be a daylight campfire by the Grand Army veterans of Essex County at Abbot Hall. This is the annual fall gathering and the campfire is substituted for the usual parade. Conrade Swasey is the presiding officer of the gathering and Captain W.H. Brown is the treasurer. There will be notable speakers present and the general public will have access to the gallery.

• DEDRICK - In this town, Sept. 21, a daughter to Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dedrick.
• RHOADS - September 21, a daughter to MR. and Mrs. Harry W. Rhoads.

MARRIED: 

• BAILEY-CONNOLLEY - In Winthrop, September 16, by Rev. John H. Griffin, Miss Mary A. Connolley of Winthrop and Mr. Harry T. Bailey of Marblehead.

DIED:

• MEEHAN - In this town, September 20, John Meehan, aged 65 years, a native of Ireland.
• NOON - September 23, Patrick Noon, aged 62 years, 11 months, 9 days, a native of Ireland.
