Tickets On Sale Now for "Gypsy" at Marblehead Little Theatre

Marblehead, Mass. – Tickets are on sale now at mltlive.org for Marblehead Little Theatre’s production of the Broadway blockbuster musical “Gypsy, A Musical Fable,” which runs from June 24 to July 3 at the MLT Firehouse, 12 School St., in Marblehead.

Multi-award winning “Gypsy” is the story of an ambitious stage mother fighting for her daughters’ success – while secretly yearning for her own – based on the memoir of striptease artist Gypsy Rose Lee. In 1989, Frank Rich, Jr., wrote in his New York Times’ column, “Gypsy is nothing if not Broadway’s own brassy, unlikely answer to ‘King Lear.’”

“'Gypsy' was selected as this year’s MLT summer musical for two primary reasons: first, it is considered by many theatre professionals as the finest musical ever created from the day it premiered in 1959 to the present and, second, it gave us a chance to honor Stephen Sondheim’s lyrical genius,” said co-producer Emily Black, noting that Sondheim, one of musical theatre’s most important and ground-breaking icons, died last November.

“The show features one extraordinary song after another – songs we all recognize,” said director Steve Black, “including ‘Everything’s Coming Up Roses,’ ‘Let Me Entertain You,’ ‘Some People,’ ‘All I Need Is the Girl,’ ‘You Gotta Get A Gimmick,’ ‘Small World,’ and ‘Together Wherever We Go.’”

“We can honestly say our cast members deliver remarkable performances that make the story and the music come alive a-new,” said Danuta Shasha, co-producer. “The original Broadway production starred Ethel Merman as Rose. That’s a lot to live up to.”

To let the audience focus on the exceptional music and acting talents of the cast, Black explained, “we stripped down the set design to reflect the rawness to Rose’s character. She did the best with what she had to work with, and with it created glitz and glamour. Not only does this enable the audience to focus on the performance, it also allows them to have a greater focus on the intricacies of each character.”

The show’s book was written by Arthur Laurents, with music by Jules Styne and lyrics by Sondheim.
