Top 10 Senior Athletes Of The Year

After years of competition for MHS, these athletes have stood above the rest, earning awards and breaking records along the way.

The teams from Marblehead High School had unbelievable success during every season this year. These 10 senior athletes helped lead the way:

Hayes Richardson

Teams: Football, Lacrosse, Baseball

Richardson will never be forgotten for his football career at MHS, although he has given noteworthy performances in both lacrosse and baseball as well.

The quarterback recorded 18 touchdowns in both running and passing the ball. He had 1,703 total yards passing and 582 yards rushing. As a result, he was voted Northeastern Conference Small Co-Player of the Year.

Richardson is credited with helping his team break school records in both points per game (30) and wins per season (10). He led his team to their first NEC title in 36 years and their first Super Bowl appearance ever.

Football head-coach Jim Rudloff will remember him for his "excellent swagger that gives everyone around him confidence."

In addition to being a superior athlete, Richardson is an excellent student and will attend Indiana University in the fall.

Katie Corbett

Teams: Skiing, Girls Lacrosse

Despite being awarded NEC all-star status and leading the NEC in scoring with 84 points (36 goals, 48 assists) for the girls' lacrosse team, Corbett will be most remembered for beginning a ski program at Marblehead High School as a freshman.

As a result of her efforts and with the help of many others, Marblehead High School has the best girls' high school ski team in the state, winning back-to-back state titles, a feat no other MHS sports team has accomplished.

Corbett represented MHS at the state tournament at Wachusett Mountain, and went on to compete in the Eastern High School Skiing Championships at Attitash Mountain in New Hampshire. The EHSC are comprised of the best skiers from Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and DC/Virginia. Massachusetts placed second overall in the prestigious competition.

Corbett will be playing midfield/attack for the Bentley University Falcons lacrosse team in the fall, and will continue skiing for fun on her down-time.

Anders Gundersen

Team: Boys' Hockey

The two-time captain ends his high school career with two Division 3 North titles, and as the school's second all-time leading scorer among defensemen.

Playing all four years on the MHS hockey team, he has netted more than 14 years of hockey in his lifetime.

He plans to attend a postgraduate year at either Berkshire or Tilton Academy, and then transfer to a Division 3 hockey school in the NESCAC league.

Kelsey Maguire

Team: Girls' Hockey

Kelsey has earned numerous accolades during her playing career at MHS. She was given the Michael Snow Memorial Unsung Hero Award in both her freshman and sophomore years, the 7th Player Award her junior season, and was named team captain and North Cape All-Star her senior year.

Marblehead's best offensive player award recipient, she totaled 10 goals and 19 points, placing fifth on the school's all-time scoring list. Maguire will be remembered for scoring both of Marblehead's state tournament goals in a heart-breaking 3-2 loss to Andover.

"Kelsey has garnered my respect as well her teammates for her knowledge of the sport and her consistency on the ice, whether it is in practices or games," said Coach Emily Hudak.

Besides being a great athlete, she is known for being caring and compassionate, volunteering her time at the Youth Hockey Learn to Skate program.

Alex Haigis

Teams: Boys' Lacrosse, Football

Haigis helped the MHS Boys Lacrosse team finish second in the NEC with his unstoppable defense, earning him the title of NEC Defensive Most Valuable Player. He was also chosen as a first team all-star and showcased his tenacious play in the EMASS all-star game.

Haigis has been a starter for the varsity lacrosse team the last three years and is credited with "always being up for the challenge" by Coach Wilkens, who consistently placed him against the opposing team's most talented players.

Haigis will also be immortalized for helping the MHS football team beat the Swampscott Big Blue during the 2009 Thanksgiving Day game. Fans will always remember his 13-yard game-winning catch with 56.9 seconds remaining.

Sure to be sorely missed, Haigis will take his defensive prowess to Division 3 Lacrosse powerhouse Salisbury University in the fall.

Micailah Adee

Teams: Girls' Lacrosse, Soccer, Indoor Track

Co-captain Micailah Adee was honored for her terrific defensive play on the lacrosse field by being named MVP of the Northeastern Conference North. Coach Carolyn Coyle said that Adee was "one of her most consistent players."

Initially a midfielder, Coyle shifted her to the defense, where she excelled for the Magicians as they advanced to the MIAA Division 2 North Quarterfinals.

Justin Hyte

Team: Boys' Tennis

Justin Hyte completed his senior season undefeated, a feat few have achieved. His exceptional season got him voted the Northeastern Conference Small Most Valuable Player.

Hyte played all four years at first singles and acted as co-captain for the last two seasons. Players and coaches deem him an excellent role model.

Coach Foukal said, "He has helped develop the games of some of the younger players, he spearheaded the fundraising efforts this year and has shown a lot of growth in his leadership ability this season."

Hyte hopes to continue his tennis career at the University of Delaware in September.

Sarah Bittermann

Teams: Indoor and outdoor track

Participating in both indoor and outdoor track, Bittermann leaves MHS with a handful of achievements and honors.

"She is one of the smartest runners I have ever coached, definitely a student of the sport," said Coach Mike Toomey. She learned quickly what it took to win, being crowned NEC champion in the 400-meter hurdles, 600-meter race, and 4 X 400m relay. An NEC all-star, she is the current record holder in the 400 meter hurdles.

She will also be immortalized for setting school records in the 400 meter hurdles and the 4 X 400 meter relay, a team that placed 12th at USA Nationals.

Bittermann plans to major in foreign languages and run track at UMass-Amherst in the fall.

Jonathan Taylor

Team: Wrestling, Football

Taylor will be remembered for his wrestling career at MHS, where he finished the regular season at 20-3, won the CAL/NEC tournament and took first at the Division 3 North individual sectional championship at Pentucket High School at the weight class of 285 pounds.

Though he took home three silver and one gold medal in the four regular season tournaments, he lost 1-2 in the state tournament in Cohasset.

Coach Mike Stamison enjoyed having Taylor on his team, saying he "is a gentle giant, jovial, hilarious and as a team and coaching staff; we're a better program for having him."

Taylor plans on majoring in marketing at Hofstra University in the fall.

Mary Keroack

Teams: Indoor and outdoor track, Soccer

Named NEC South Player of the year and NEC all-star in the 300 meter and 4 X 400m relay for indoor track, Keroack "will be missed when we line up to race next year," said Coach Mike Toomey.

Toomey continued, "She was the heart and soul of our team and really led by example." Honored as the team MVP, she excelled in the 300 meter race, setting a school record in the event, winning the MIAA Division 3 State title and finishing second at the All-State competition.

She was also part of the 4 X 400m relay team that finished 12th at USA Nationals, while also setting a new school record.

In addition, Keroack is a force of nature on the soccer field, honored NEC all-star status three times. She was a two-time selection as the offensive player of the year and served as team captain as a senior.

She is committed to play soccer at Cornell in 2010.
