Traffic Calming Curb On Pleasant
The latest milestone in the town's "Big Dig" drainage project is installation of granite curbs.
Crews started the granite curbing job at the four corners of Pleasant and School on Monday in downtown Marblehead.
They'll be done installing the 6-by-18 inches granite today, Tuesday, Aug. 6.
And by week's end the concrete sidewalks and ramp will be in, said Mike Jackson of Bartlett Steadman construction in Marblehead.
All corners but the one nearest the National Grand Bank will have bump outs, he said.
Bumped out curbing curves outward, the rounded edge serving to slow traffic. Each corner will comply with Americans with Disabilities Act regs giving all people access, he said.
The bank corner will have a ramp and the other three corners will have lowered curb areas for wheelchairs and others who need the lowered areas for access.
Late Tuesday morning Mike Jackson operated a small excavator hauling out the
old curbing and lowering the new granite pieces.
A crew from Reveal Inc. of Wakefield set the pieces, aligning them and making them level, all the while being carefully of their fingers.
Granite is heavy.
