U-10 Magicians Crunch Gloucester

Marblehead scored four runs in the bottom of the first and sent the Nor'easters home with a 7-1 loss in the last game of the season.

The Marblehead Magicians U-10 softball team must have known that bad weather was heading toward town. The girls roared out to a 7-1 lead, and when the game was called, the girls had finished their season with a big win and an 11-2-1 record.

“Just a solid game from our team,” Manager Peter Ernst said. “Sammy (Treff) and Mandy (Dumais) both pitched well, we went ahead early and the girls made it stand up.”

“We wanted to finish the game, make it official, I’m glad we got it in, the result was not what we wanted, but Marblehead played a nice game,” Gloucester coach Alex McNeil said.

It was easy to tell that Marblehead's players were happy to end the season on a high note. Tuesday's loss meant Gloucester finished their season with a record of 4-7-1.

Sammy Treff started on the mound for Marblehead and ended up in a tough spot in the top of the first, finding the bases loaded with two outs. Despite the pressure, Treff took charge and struck out Rachel Rallo to get out of the jam.

Marblehead made things happen with two outs in the bottom of the first. Treff singled to center and found herself on third base after Dumais and Elizabeth Myers walked.

Bel Sogoloff walked to force in Treff, and Elizabeth Legget and Emma Pelkey scratched out infield hits off Gloucester starter Elizabeth Schuster to put the home team up 4-0 after one full.

Molly Field scored the only Gloucester run in the top of the second, coming home on when Treff walked Mariah Colbert.

The Magicians got that run right back in the bottom of the inning, when Treff touched home on a fielder’s choice by Dumais.

The Magicians put the game out of reach as the rain started to fall with two runs in the bottom of the third.

Bel Sogloff walked to start the inning and she came home on an infield hit by Ali New. New scored the final Marblehead run on a single by Sophia Vener.

Treff started the game for Marblehead, with Dumais coming on in relief to start the third inning. Dumais struck out Gloucester’s Ryan Pereira with a runner on first to end the game.

“Great season, really great, I’m really proud of all the girls,” manager Peter Ernst said after the game. “Special thanks to the girls on the team, and really, a big thank you to the parents who supported us all season.”
