U12 Mariners Lose Final Game

In their last game of the summer season, the Mariners lost 6-2 to the Wyoma Wildcats on Wednesday at Veterans School.

The U12 Marblehead Mariners softball team ended its first summer season Wednesday night, with a 6-2 loss to the Wyoma Wildcats at Veterans School. Despite the loss, the girls put together a strong program that was able to stay competitive against some tough competition.

The Lynn girls came out swinging, getting a single from Michaela Hamill, an RBI-double from Brandy Sequeira, and an RBI-single from Courtney Braswell to put the visitors on top 2-0 in the first.

Emily Promise, who pitched the first and second innings, was able to get the next six outs to keep Marblehead in the game.

The Mariners cut the Wildcats lead in half in the bottom of the second inning as four walks from Lynn's Hamill brought Margaret Ross across home plate, making the score 2-1.

Lynn opened up their lead again in the top of the third inning, as McKenzie Joyce took over pitching duties for Marblehead. Ivy Martin was able to drive in Sequeira and Braswell with a two-RBI double into centerfield.

Both teams were kept scoreless in the fourth, but Lynn was able to plate another run in the fifth as Jessica Dejoie knocked Martin home, extending the Wildcats' lead to 5-1.

Promise returned to the circle in the sixth and traded scoreless innings with Lynn's Hamill before Sequeira crushed a ball deep into centerfield in the seventh, which she turned into a homerun.

Montana Joyce rounded the bases for Marblehead in the bottom of the seventh inning, but it wasn't enough to catch the Wildcats, which took the 6-2 victory.

Hamill pitched a complete game for Lynn, racking up 17 strikeouts, while allowing two hits and seven walks.

Montana Joyce played an excellent game for Marblehead, both on offense and at shortstop. Joyce was the only Mariner to reach base in all of her at-bats and was involved in eight outs in four innings in the infield.

In just their first season in the Middle-Essex Softball League, the U12 Marblehead Mariners finished 7-6-1.
