VIDEO: Header Softball Confident Going Into Season
The Marblehead girls' softball team is looking to put a disappointing 2010 behind them as they prepare for the 2011 season.
The 2011 Marblehead girls’ softball team is looking to erase the bad memories of 2010 as quickly as they can after missing the state tournament last season and finishing with a 7-13 record.
After four straight post-season appearances, the Headers had eight one-run losses last season, a big factor in missing the playoffs.
“We suffered some tough losses last year for sure,” coach Johnny Gold said at a practice last week. “Hopefully we’ve gained some experience so we can close out and win those tight games this year.”

Gold is in his sixth season as coach of MHS softball, and he’ll be joined this season by coaches Todd Norman and Dave Kalpin.
Gold has six starters returning on what he called a “young team with some experience,” from last year’s squad.

The top hitter from 2010, Kathy DiGiammarino is returning, as well as co-captains Sarah Hastings and Emmy York. York will patrol left field with Hastings getting most of the action on the pitcher’s mound.
“I hope the weather cooperates, it’s been tough to get on the field heading into the regular season,” Gold said. “We’re a year older and I think we’ll definitely benefit from that experience.”
The Headers play their home games behind the Veteran’s Middle School, with opening day set for Friday, April 8, at 4 p.m.
