Driver Crashes Into Marblehead Police Cruiser

A Marblehead police officer was lucky to escape injury after a woman sideswiped his cruiser, authorities said.

MARBLEHEAD, MA — A Marblehead police officer was lucky to escape injury Tuesday after a driver sideswiped his cruiser, authorities said.

Police said the crash happened around 11 a.m. as the officer was conducting a traffic stop near the Glover School. While the officer was in his cruiser reviewing registration information, a female driver struck the cruiser, police said. The officer was not hurt.

The driver, who was not identified, was charged with violating the state's "move over" law created to protect first responders.

"Please, as you approach us, or any emergency crews on the road, slow down and give us a wide berth—our safety is in your hands," Marblehead police said in a statement.

The cruiser was heavily damaged and was taken out of service for repairs, police said.
